Over 35 years ago, a small group of women, who had met during quilt classes at Center Place, took a leap of faith by advertising an organizational meeting of a Brandon quilt guild. Twenty five people showed up at that meeting and they decided to form a guild. Today, two of our founding members are still active and a very vital part of our guild. Since then, hundreds of women and two men have been members of the guild. We have grown to over 100 active members with 60 or more attending our monthly quild meetings.
We have served our community by making hundreds of NICU quilts, hundreds of Christmas stockings for the Sheriff’s office, decorated trees for the Chamber of Commerce fund raising effort, put quilts on the beds of Joshua House and A Kids place, wrapped veterans in quilts for QOV and before that, made quilts for HomeFront quilts for soldiers from Desert Storm. We have made blessing bags for the belongings of children who have been removed from their homes, sent quilts to victims of Katrina, and volunteered at the State Fair and Strawberry Festival to further our craft. We have hosted quilt shows that have been enjoyed by our membership and our community.
We have supported new quilters and offered workshops for experienced members to strengthen their skills. Our main purpose in forming the guild was to create a caring community of people who enjoyed making quilts and to teach others about quilting. We have nine Sewing Bee groups that meet at various times during each month. We are a group of women who genuinely care about one another.
